Art in many forms

Just thought I'd share with you all what stares at us as we walk downstairs each time. I have no idea who this is by, sorry, my aunt purchased it (at a "real art" price no less!). She's been moving around so we got the aquisition. It's defo kind of creepy but I love love love the shading.

AND.. some more pics. Laos again this time.

It's incredible how much effort they put into their Buddha representations of all forms. Paintings, statues, the ornate temples... I'll post some temples soon.

Something's not right...

What's wrong with this picture?

Word of the day:
hy⋅per⋅bo⋅le [hahy-pur-buh-lee]
–noun Rhetoric.

1. obvious and intentional exaggeration.
2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.”

This word is SO me. I am the Queen of dramatized statements.

The new PoGo.

Thanks to Veronicahhh, I started looking into good old Polaroid. They are coming out with a modern age (sad, yet cool) version of the instant Polaroid camera this Spring (in the US anyways), called PoGo. They currently have a portable printer only (again, sadly not compatible with my new baby, iPhone) and the paper it's printed on is something called ZINK- Zero Ink. Pretty neat stuff.

US prices show a 30 pack of paper @ $13 US- not something I'd use everyday but this would have been awesome for my travels through Asia- your subjects (adults included!) love to see the image on the back on the camera. How cool would this have been to print images instantly and gift them! I would have had so much fun! Wonder when it's coming to Canada!!

iPhone pics

Of course I'm going nuts with my new iPhone but since its not yet 9am, my pics can't be TOO interesting.

1. Looking out from our front room with Cooper, my kitty, looking too.
2. Cooper. ♥ best kitty in the world.
3. My new fragrance- Lil Angel by Gwen Stefani Harajuku Lovers. Love it. The doll bit comes off and the perfume is the base. Even the box was cool, with the story of the angel.

From my travels in Vietnam- an arts & crafts shop in Hoi An. I just love this photo- the colours and shapes, and if you look closely enough, the texture of the silk. Beautiful!

I bought a teal one (elsewhere) for the equivalent of $4.50cdn. A good bargain if I do say so myself!

More Vintage Images

V–J day in Times Square, perhaps the most famous photograph by Alfred Eisenstadet, is of an American sailor kissing a young woman on V-J Day in Times Square on August 14, 1945, that was originally published in Life magazine. (Wikipedia)

Apparently numerous people have made claims to being the unknown subjects, and the photo wouldn't have been taken if they weren't wearing contrasting colours.

I love this vintage poster - I have a magnet version! Remember those tampon ads??

News: Khmer Rouge

Something that caught my attention on the news: Comrade Duch, a "chief torturer in the Khmer Rouge", is on trial for his crimes against humanity 30 years after the fact.

"between 1976-79 he ran the Khmer Rouge's most secret security facility, a jail called Secret Police Office 21, or S-21."

I visited the site of s-21 while in Cambodia, which is now set up as a museum to make people aware of the horrors the Cambodians experienced. Unfortunately (or, fortunately?) I was so ill from some sort of food at the time that I got in, then turned around and walked out to sleep on the bus. (The pic was taken while I was debating if I could stand. It's for real.)

"According to the indictment prepared by the court's investigating judges every prisoner sent to Duch was automatically condemned to death or – in the language of the Khmer Rouge – "absolutely had to be smashed". It alleges that even if prisoners were innocent they had to be "smashed" to preserve the secrecy of S-21. "

Source: UK Telegraph

It's a bit of a grim thing to post but after experiencing the country firsthand, I am happy they are finally getting some closure. The really messed up thing about this Hitler-style regime is that they targeted educated people- for the reasons that uneducated would not "go against" the new political party.

I'm so glad the Cambodians have rebounded so well after this! It was one of my fave countries.

Word of the day..

schadenfreude \SHOD-n-froy-duh\, noun:
A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of others.

Schadenfreude comes from the German, from Schaden, "damage" + Freude, "joy." It is often capitalized, as it is in German.

He died three years after me -- cancer too -- and at that time I was still naive enough to imagine that what the afterlife chiefly provided were unrivalled opportunities for unbeatable gloating, unbelievable schadenfreude.
-- Will Self, How The Dead Live

thanks dictionary.com.

And, one of my fave pics taken during my travels. This is at a monastery, in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR.

Stefani Germanotta

a.k.a. Lady GaGa. My new fave artist of the mo. This is what she looks like without a cake of make-up.

Some facts you may not know: she is turning just 23 next month. She was previously employed as a songwriter for the likes of the Pussycat Dolls (it all makes sense now doesn't it?). She was born in NYC. "Fashion is everything"

Her album, The Fame, is on repeat right now. In addition to her club hits, she actually has really amazing voice which you get to HEAR in loads of her songs. Ok, there are a few more sexually loaded songs (taking a ride on someone's disco stick? Come on!) but I'm totally loving it. And who doesn't secretly wish they could get away with her style?

L’instant cool

I just (re) discovered this vintage image poster I bought off eBay. When I was gone, my sister stole my room and stashed it up and away from my eyes.

champagne

It’s Grace Kelly in a 1955 champagne ad. I don’t know why but i just LOVE it. Unfortunately it’s pretty big (the exact size escapes me) so I have to wait for a larger room to hang it. And, hanging then presents its own challenge… !!

Family Guy Hilariosity

Did I just make up a new word? (Yes, I dictionary.com-ed it. But who cares, I like it.)

Ok, watch this. Listen for inhumane screams and phrases.

The Grape Lady

and now… The Grape Stewie

Enjoy. Be careful stomping those grapes!

Hair U Wear

I was always kind of a bit skeptical of clip-in hair extensions, (ESPECIALLY the synthetic ones) but when my chin length hair start growing into the awkward stage, I as more than ready to give it a shot. Luckily, I “know people” so i was given the good advice from a stylist mate that with extensions, you shouldn’t (I’m going to go ahead and make that a CAN’T) go more than twice the length of your actual current hair length.

(Case in point: I saw a girl today with hair my length on top, and looong extensions. It looked ratty and mullet like. Do NOT go there, no matter how much you crave long tresses as a short-haired girl.) So, for me, chin length x 2 is a shoulder length style. I headed to a beauty supplier and chose my poison: 15″ wavy in Midnight Brown from the Ken Paves & Jessica Simpson HairDO line.

Since my hair actually wasn’t midnight brown at the time, I was glad that they had a stylist working there (ok, albeit a rude one) who helped me choose the appropriate shade based on my colourant.

Anyways, the first time I tried it in I was so disappointed, first off the colour difference was a few shades and it looked so silly! My hair had also been flicked out, and as much as I tried to style down flat the short top layer, it wasn’t hiding the “weft” as it’s termed. But, I perserved, and now with the colour matching my real hair, that I fooled a friend who I hadn’t seen in a long time, she thought it was my natural hair!

They work by pinning up your lower section of hair, and stretching the piece, which has the shape of the lower half of a scalp, to the sides and bottom of your head and securing it with easy-to-use clips. It really does only take 5 mins (or less), and since you pin up your hair, you can go from long to sort styles as well!

So, I would definitely say go for these. See if you can get them from any beauty suppliers open to the public, as the cost is pretty astronomical for something you can’t use anymore once you change your hair colour. Also be sure to pick up a synthetic hair condition and a pick (next on my list!). I’m definitely going to buy the 10″ straight when I get a a paycheque!

Digging Whitney Port's oversized headband

Whitney's Winter Gear
Whitney's Winter Gear

Whitney was spotted in this unique piece of head gear in Ep. 5 of The City- the kick-ass new spinoff from The Hills. My sister and I kept quiet as our friends bashed the look, then bravely announced that we actually kind of LIKED it, and have now coerced our mom into knitting us our very own version.

It's from Anthropologie, however I'm unable to find it on the website.

While searching for this pic, I discovered Whitney's very own official web page and blog.
